Music And Performance

Universal Liberation Through Creative Self-Actualization

What the hell does it mean?

My little catchphrase/motto has several layers to it.

  1. Personal Fulfillment-

We are all born to be infinitely creative, then our environment/upbringing either reinforces it (if you’re lucky) or (in most cases) restricts it. As Picasso said “Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up.”

How many of us have had our creativity conditioned/shamed/beaten out of us by well-meaning (or not) parents/family/friends? And how many of us still carry those scars (emotional and real) today, even if we’ve managed to hold on to our creativity?

A huge percentage of the most angry/unpleasant/destructive people I’ve ever met have had some sort of unfulfilled or denied creative urge/ability at the core of their bitterness. I’ve seen many of them have a complete 180 in their personality and happiness quotient when they were finally allowed the opportunity to scratch that itch.

I’ve seen shy and withdrawn people become ebullient and sociable (not that there’s anything wrong with being shy and withdrawn), depressed people become happier, and people’s health improve tremendously just because of getting in touch with their creative selves again. It’s not a miracle, but it sometimes looks like one.

  1. Social Connection-

Before the advent of mass media technology, we all entertained each other and derived our sense of personal identity from these group activities; hoedowns, hootenannies, social dances, and any number of other creative gatherings were at the heart of everyday life and our society. Virtually everyone knew how to dance, sing, and play a musical instrument. People would get together and read poetry to each other, sometimes from a book, sometimes their own. Storytelling was a major part of everyone’s life.

But when radio, television, and other media took over our society we lost touch with our creativity. We began to look outside of ourselves for entertainment, culture, and fulfillment. Popular Culture/Art/Entertainment became something we purchased and consumed, no longer part of the fabric of our lives in a meaningful sense.

We sit in our homes every night, separate from each other and from our own feelings and stories. The Loneliness Epidemic is real, and there are clear causes of it, many of them intentionally brought upon us.

Which brings us to the next layer.

  1. Freedom From Corporate Domination And The Billionaire Oligarchy-

In recent decades the disconnect became complete and most people are now divorced from their own creativity— and now look to multi-national corporations and tech conglomerates for their entertainment and (most-importantly) culture.

It has truly created a society full of sheepish conformists completely unable to think for themselves and/or understand what is going on in the world and in their own heads.

In this environment, those who would control and subdue us have enormous power over our lives and are able to control the public narrative (and everything else). The struggle for freedom, democracy, and justice falters when people are afraid to lose their creature comforts and elaborate conveniences.

I hate to break this to y’all, but The Revolution will likely entail having to cancel your Netflix and Amazon Prime. But as the joyous satisfaction of a Hootenanny demonstrates; we don’t have to give up our fun.

And if we all band together in Creative Solidarity— Not only entertaining ourselves and each other, but also using our creativity and intelligence to come up with ways to thwart the fascists, oligarchs, and corporations who have enslaved us.

What is happening in Minnesota right now is a great example of Group Creativity in the Service of Freedom and Justice. We shall all have to continue that battle on an infinite number of fronts for as long as it takes.

So there you have it. My little Hootenannies are but one step in the journey of a thousand miles. If we apply that DIY Spirit to every aspect of our lives and work together to make it happen, we can transform this world and bring about the next phase of human and global evolution.

UNIVERSAL LIBERATION THROUGH CREATIVE SELF-ACTUALIZATION

It should really be Universal Liberation Through COMMUNAL Creative Self-Actualization— but that’s kind of clunky and doesn’t fit as well on a T-Shirt!

We are slowly getting the Henge ready for Halloween, but first we must have an early October Hootenanny to get us in the proper frame of mind.

The usual array of fine musicians, comics, poets, storytellers, and whatever else comes through the door will be on hand, plus the fine folks who come to witness the spectacle. And don’t forget Independence Tap’s excellent array of reasonably priced ales and spirits.

Please come and join us for a Mystically good time!!!

And the rest is history…

Independence Tap is a great space and this night is perfect for working out new material and expanding horizons as an Artist/Performer.

When we host Open Stages we create an atmosphere of respect for all genres of performance where Artists can feel safe and secure. [No stylistic cliquishness OR DISRESPECT allowed!]

Our greatest joy comes from seeing someone perform for the first time or watching an Artist try out a new genre: a Musician doing Storytelling, a Storyteller doing Stand-Up, a Poet playing Music, a Stand-Up reading a poem…

The Place Where The Boundaries Meet & Overlap Is Where True Magic Happens.

And there is nothing like the feeling of opening a door into a new room in the mansion of your soul— SO COME ON DOWN & GO ON UP!!!

As this shot of an alley in 1930 shows, we Chicagoans are used to getting together with friends and making our own fun with whatever is handy.

So in that spirit we convene again for our 2nd live Hootenanny. The usual array of fine musicians, comics, poets, storytellers, and whatever else comes through the door will be on hand, plus the fine folks who come to witness the spectacle.

And don’t forget Independence Tap’s excellent array of reasonably priced ales and spirits. Add it all up and it is one smoldering good time!!!

And the rest is history…

In 2013, I was hosting an Open Stage on Monday nights at the short-lived Frankenstone Art Center on Foster in North Park.

Dedicated to the motto “Universal Liberation Through Creative Self-Actualization” it was an open stage that welcomed all types of performer (particularly first time performers) and encouraged everyone to expand their boundaries and horizons as an Artist.

That very first show someone who had just come to spectate felt comfortable enough to read their own words in public for the first time ever- and I knew I was on to something.

A couple shows later, one of the poets told me about a space right around the corner on Kimball. It was called the Roots Room and was run by a veteran Chicago musician and artist who was dedicated to the same principles of fostering creative development in all people.

I finally got up the gumption to head over there a few months later and go inside. That was the night I first met Stann Champion.

It was Variety Open Mic night, so I did some stand-up, poetry, and storytelling in a Combo Platter set; then Stann and I did a few tunes with me accompanying him on harmonica.

We hit it off immediately, and I began co-hosting Variety Night every 2nd Friday of the month for the next several years. Stann and I also got together with the amazing rhythm section of his Reggae/Calypso band (Roots Rock Society) and formed a new Blues/Rock/Roots band called the Propaganda Machine.

After the demise of the Roots Room in 2018, we both took a break from open mic hosting for a while.

In February of 2019 we were offered the opportunity to take over FretKnot Fridays at the Independence Tap. We started slow but soon built things up to where our old Roots Room crowd had reconstituted.

Then the magic kicked into high gear and we kept adding regulars to the mix who were just as committed to the principles of Creativity and Community as we were.

One year later we have a beautiful thing going on!!!

Stann and I still love to rock the duo thing!
